Distribution Occurs throughout the range of Podophyllum peltatum in eastern North America and on Diphylleia sinensis in Mt. Taibaishan, Shaanxi, China.
Characteristics Autoecious demicyclic rust fungus. Spermogonial-aecial infection forms small to large, circular to elliptical lesions on leaves. Aecia are orange-yellow, Aecidium-type; telia are dark brown or blackish with two-celled teliospores (38–60 × 20–28 µm) bearing sharp-pointed spines.
Notes Common on P. peltatum in eastern North America. Chinese specimens (P. diphylleiae) determined as P. podophylli after comparative morphology. Biological and phylogenetic relationships between geographically isolated populations remain of interest.
Economic importance Mainly of academic and ecological interest; causes leaf rust on Podophyllum peltatum but not known to cause significant economic damage.
