Distribution Known only from Japan (Ono et al. 2001), but likely distributed more widely in East Asia based on host records in China and Taiwan.
Characteristics Heteroecious macrocyclic rust fungus. Spermogonial and aecial infections form circular whitish lesions on Disporum leaves; spermogonia subepidermal, 90–140 × 110–150 µm, subglobose to ovoid; aecia Aecidium-type, whitish, erumpent; aeciospores subglobose to ellipsoid, 16–25 × 15–21 µm, verrucose. Uredinia on Carex spp. abaxial leaf surface, Uredo-type, whitish to pale brown, producing urediniospores 21–34 × 20–31 µm, thick-walled (3–5 µm), strongly echinulate, with 4–5 equatorial germ pores. Telia erumpent, pulvinate, black; teliospores two-celled, 32–55 × 12–23 µm, chestnut-brown, smooth, apically thickened (7–15 µm), on persistent pedicels up to 50 µm long.
Notes Puccinia albispora was described as the teleomorphic counterpart of Aecidium dispori Dietel by Ono & Kakishima (2001). Its heteroecious macrocyclic life cycle connects Disporum spp. (aecial host, Asparagaceae) with Carex spp. (telial host, Cyperaceae). Possible unverified reports from China and Taiwan suggest wider East Asian distribution.
Economic importance Minor plant rust of limited agricultural importance; of interest primarily for its complex host alternation between Asparagaceae and Cyperaceae species.
