Distribution Widely distributed in cool temperate regions of East and Northeast Asia. In Korea, only uredinial and telial stages are reported on Smilax nipponica (Shirai 1895; Dietel 1908; Togashi & Onuma 1931; Sawada 1959; Anonymous 1979; Tai 1979; Azbukina 1984; Ono et al. 1987, 1988; Hiratsuka et al. 1992; Zhuang & Wei 1994; Zhang et al. 1997; Cao & Li 1999; Cho & Shin 2004; Azbukina 2005; Zhuang 2005).
Characteristics Autoecious macrocyclic rust fungus. Rust-infected shoots densely branched with malformed leaves. Spermogonia on stipules, subepidermal, 110–140 µm wide × 115–150 µm high; aecia on adaxial leaf surface, Caeoma-type, yellow or orange, producing aeciospores 25–48 × 21–30 µm, aciculate wall. Uredinia minute, abaxial, producing urediniospores 18–28 × 17–28 µm, echinulate. Telia produced similarly, teliospores 32–55 × 27–43 µm, thin-walled, smooth, four-celled metabasidia formed upon maturity.
Notes Complete macrocyclic and heteroecious life cycle confirmed by field and inoculation studies (Ono et al. 1987). Spermogonial and aecial stages on Padus grayana; uredinial and telial stages on Smilax species.
Economic importance Minor forest pathogen affecting cherry and smilax hosts; primarily of academic and ecological significance.
