Distribution Widely distributed in East and Southeast Asia (China, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, and others). Rust records from Mexico require re-examination (Gallegos & Cummins 1981).
Characteristics Autoecious macrocyclic rust fungus. Spermogonia and aecia formed in dense clusters or scattered on the adaxial leaf surface; spermogonia intraepidermal, hemispherical, 120–160 × 90–120 µm. Aecia intraepidermal, Uredo-type, yellowish, erumpent; aeciospores subglobose to obovoid, 22–35 × 20–30 µm, strongly echinulate. Uredinia and telia on abaxial surface, minute, dense; urediniospores globose to subglobose, 25–30 × 24–30 µm, verrucose-echinulate; teliospores globose, 20–30 × 20–26 µm, thin-walled and smooth.
Notes Aecial sori are Uredo-type; due to minute spermogonia among dense aecial clusters, these have been mistaken for uredinia. True uredinia and urediniospores often obscured by dense teliospore clusters. Requires careful microscopic identification to avoid confusion with other Rubus rusts.
Economic importance Minor plant pathogen on Rubus spp. (Rosaceae); mainly of taxonomic and ecological significance, not known to cause major agricultural damage.
