Distribution China and Japan (Kaneko & Hiratsuka 1983; Hiratsuka et al. 1992; Kobayashi 2007).
Characteristics Only uredinial and telial stages known. Uredinia minute, scattered or densely grouped on abaxial surface, subepidermal, Milesia-type with conical ostiolar cell 18–35 µm long; yellowish and powdery. Urediniospores oblong-ellipsoid to pyriform, 17–30 × 10–15 µm, echinulate, with 2–4 equatorial germ pores. Telia minute, compact, brown, mostly on abaxial surface; teliospores in a single layer under epidermis, oblong-ellipsoid, 17–40 × 7–14 µm, pale yellow to colorless, smooth-walled.
Notes Originally misidentified as Melampsoridium carpini; later recognized as a distinct species by Kaneko & Hiratsuka (1983). Only uredinial and telial stages are known; no spermogonia or aecia observed. Common on Carpinus and Ostrya in East Asia.
Economic importance Minor rust fungus on deciduous forest trees (Carpinus, Ostrya); of limited economic importance but taxonomically significant within Melampsoridium group.
