Synonyms ≡ Peronospora dentariae-macrophyllae Gäum., Beih. Bot. Centralbl. 35(1): 523 (1918)
Disease Downy mildew
Taxonomic Rank
Order Peronosporales Family Peronosporaceae
Host Plant
Common Name White-flower bittercress (미나리냉이) Scientific Name Cardamine leucantha
Species thumbnail
Distribution Japan, Korea
Characteristics Lesions commonly present on leaves, causing discoloration of the affected tissues, initially yellowish, later becoming brown to greyish, polyangular, vein-limited, frequently covering larger areas by coalescing. Down present on the lower leaf surface, whitish, consisting of dense, felt-like conidiophore outgrowth forming patches. Conidiophores emerging through stomata, hyaline to subhyaline, slender, straight, (315.5–)348.1–420.2–492.3(–614.7) µm long (n=15). Ultimate branchlets mostly in pairs, but rarely single, reflexuous to sigmoid, (9.1–)10.7–13.7–16.7(–22.6) µm long, (0.8–)1.4–1.8–2.1(–2.6) µm wide at the base, tip obtuse or subtruncate (n = 30). Conidia hyaline, ellipsoidal to subglobose, (19.0–)20.8–22.8–24.8(–26.4) μm long, (16.5–)17.9–19.4–21.0(–22.4) μm wide (n=30), l/w ratio (1.04–)1.07–1.18–1.28(–1.45).
Notes Hyaloperonospora dentariae-macrophyllae is a host-specialized East Asian species associated with Cardamine leucantha. Multigene analyses based on nuclear and mitochondrial loci clearly separated it from H. dentariae and other downy mildews infecting Cardamine, supporting its recognition as a distinct species (Voglmayr et al., 2014). Korean collections are morphologically and molecularly consistent with this species.
Economic importance Cardamine leucantha is primarily a wild plant, and no significant agricultural or commercial losses caused by H. dentariae-macrophyllae have been documented.
